When to go with a child for a vision screening or an eye examination?

The first vision screening should be done by a paediatrician at 6 months of age of a child and then checked regularly. It is particularly important to monitor children affected by squint and children with hereditary predisposition of an eye disorder. Make sure that your child underwent the vision screening in due time and in case of a suspected eye disorder do not hesitate to contact immediately a paediatric ophthalmologist.

How is the examination done?

The examination of children's eye disorders is performed by experienced ophthalmologists in our children's outpatient department. A child first undergoes a basic vision screening and according to the results also subsequent comprehensive eye examination. Our approach is always individual and is adapted to the individual abilities of a child.

Why to treat squint?

Under normal conditions different muscles surround each eye and work as a team so that both eyes can focus on the same object. However, in someone with squint, these muscles do not work together and one eye looks at one object, while the other eye turns in different direction and is focused on another object. Two different images are sent to the brain, one from each eye. This confuses the brain and the brain may learn to ignore the image from the weaker eye and thus stop its development. If squint is not treated in due time, it can lead to amblyopia, loss of depth perception and cosmetic defects.

Why to treat amblyopia?

If amblyopia is not treated in due time, the consequences of this eye disorder can be very serious and permanent. Amblyopia may be so severe that a child after covering the healthy eye can see objects only to distance of 1 meter and mostly just outlines of this object. In future, therefore, a risk of blindness is rather significant - any eye injuries of the healthy eye mean that the patient according to his or her amblyopia stage has a very poor sense of spatial orientation.

How is the treatment of squint done?

The treatment is always individual, according to state and cause of an eye disorder. The most commonly it takes the form of vision correction (special eye glasses) and orthoptic eye exercises to practice the parallel vision with both eyes. Children's Eye Centre KUKÁTKO provides a comprehensive and intensive treatment that is funny and motivating for your children and that brings good results.

How is the treatment of amblyopia done?

The treatment is always individual and must be done under regular supervision of an ophthalmologist and orthoptist. The most commonly it takes the form of vision correction (special eye glasses or occluder covering the healthy eye) and pleoptic eye exercises (exercises of an affected eye at close distance). Children's Eye Centre KUKÁTKO provides a comprehensive and intensive treatment that is funny and motivating for your children and that brings good results.

How long does the treatment last?

The treatment is always individual, depending on an eye disorder and extent of disability. It is usually long and requires patience from both, the child and his or her parents. Children's Eye Centre KUKÁTKO will help you with the difficult treatment and offers you not only a comprehensive and intensive approach but also help and support.

What happens when the treatment does not start in due time?

Paediatric eye disorders must be detected and treated in due time, it means still in preschool period. Therefore, the most important step in treatment is PREVENTION! If strabismus and amblyopia are not treated in due time, they can result in serious and permanent disability. There is an increased risk of blindness and loss of spatial orientation.

Is it possible to start the treatment in older children?

Paediatric eye disorders must be detected and treated in due time (it means ideally still in preschool age). The treatment can be initiated in older children, however the success of this treatment decreases with age and after the age of 12 it is practically zero.

Is it somehow possible to prevent visual defects?

Superstitions like "Do not look close on TV, you will have problems with your eyes" or "Do not read in dark, you will have problems with your eyes" have no effect on vision in children and creation of an eye disorder. Visual defects cannot be prevented because they are congenital or hereditary. However, early diagnosis and timely treatment can remedy or at least mitigate consequences of some visual defects.
